mrsa
Staphyloccus aureus (SA) is a bacterium or germ which is found in the nose or skin in about 3 in 10 of People and is usually harmless.
SA sometimes invades the skin, often through a cut or graze and is the cause of skin infections such as boils, pimples, impetigo, skin abscesses or wound infections.
SA can sometimes get into the bloodstream causing blood poisoning, lung infection, bone infection or heart valve infection. These serious infections are more likely to occur in people who are unwell, debilitated or who have poor immune systems.
MRSA are strains of SA which are particularly resistant to many antibiotics. This means they are more difficult to treat, therefore infections can become more severe.
MRSA occurs most frequently in people who are already in hospital. People who are very ill, have wounds, open sores, bed sores or burns are particularly prone. Infections which start in the skin may spread to cause more serious infections. Additionally contaminated tubes, drips or catheters can lead to urine or blood infections.
MRSA strains spread from person to person usually by direct skin-to-skin contact or by touching sheets, towels, clothes, dressings, etc, which have been used by someone who has MRSA. MRSA infections are usually treated by a limited choice of antibiotics normally given directly into a vein. The course of treatment is often for several weeks with a risk of side effects.
